Gran Reserva is the top of the Habanos ageing hierarchy and the rarest thing Cuba makes. Every leaf — filler, binder and wrapper — is aged a minimum of five years before the cigar is rolled, against three years for a standard Reserva, and the box carries the harvest year the tobacco came from.
Only a handful of Gran Reserva releases have ever been made, each in a run of a few thousand numbered boxes, and they are drawn from a single exceptional cosecha rather than blended across years. The band is black and gold with the vintage.
They are expensive and they are not for learning on. Smoke one when you already know the standard version of the cigar well enough to hear the difference — otherwise you are paying a large premium for a subtlety you have no reference for.
