Humidors

A humidor's job is stability, not humidity. Cigars tolerate a slightly wrong RH held steady far better than a correct RH that swings, and swings are exactly what an Australian home produces — 40-degree afternoons, ducted heating all winter, and in Melbourne a 30-point humidity change inside a single day when a cool change comes through.

Which is why the expensive part of a humidor is the seal, not the timber. An unseasoned or poorly-fitted wooden box bleeds moisture continuously and will lose to a sealed food-grade container with a couple of Boveda packs. Season a new humidor before you put cigars in it, keep it in the most thermally stable room in the house, and target 16–18 °C and 65–68% RH.
