How you open a cigar determines how it draws, and a bad cut is not recoverable. The three approaches each do something different.

A guillotine takes a straight slice off the cap. It is the general-purpose answer, gives the most open draw, and is the only sensible choice for a torpedo or belicoso. Cut just above the shoulder — go below it and the wrapper unravels.

A punch removes a circular plug. It keeps the cap intact, concentrates the smoke, and suits large ring gauges, but it clogs on oily cigars and cannot be used on a tapered head.

A V-cut makes a wedge, giving a deeper opening without a wide one. It draws well and is forgiving of a slightly loose roll.

Whatever you use, keep it sharp. A blunt cutter tears the cap instead of slicing it.
