A cigar lighter has one job that a cigarette lighter does not: put an even flame across a 50-ring-gauge foot without tainting the tobacco. That rules out petrol lighters and most cheap butane, both of which leave a taste on the first third.

S.T. Dupont makes two answers to that. The Ligne 2 produces a wide soft flame — slower to light with, gentler on the wrapper, and the traditional choice for a Cuban you do not want to scorch. The Maxijet and Megajet are torch lighters: a focused jet that lights a large ring gauge in seconds and does not care about wind.

If you smoke mostly outdoors or mostly large gauges, take a torch. For thin vitolas and still evenings, the soft flame is kinder to the cigar.
